SUMMER IS HERE! WOOOOOHOOO!

Summer in the vegetable garden is mostly watering, weeding and managing pests. And harvesting of course!

To manage weeds before they become to big, hoe regularly with a torpedo hoe, and mulch areas that you can well.

Water deeply and thoroughly once or twice a week rather than little sprinkles more often. You can use ‘grey water’ from the washing machine or from the shower or the bath to water the garden.

Peas and beans planted earlier should be staked now. You can keep sowing peas, carrots, radishes, runner beans, spinach and turnips.

You can also plant out early winter seedlings of cabbage, broccoli, leeks and brussles sprouts.

As onions and potatoes get closer to maturity reduce the amount you are watering, as it encourages them to dry out.
