Weekly Garden Diary: Winter Week 9

VEGETABLES

Most of your seed sowing will happen next month, but you can get a head start with a few things this week in glasshouses, plastic houses or indoors.

Young seedling need well thinned, as overcrowding will cause them to die off. Too much moisture without the required warmth will cause rot.

Lift out seedlings as soon as the first pair of true leaves form and pot them into bigger pots. It is worth the effort, as most seed raising mixes have little to no nutrients in them so the plants will struggle.

Sow your first rows of peas and Asian greens into the soil you prepared in the Fall.

Heirloom Seeds from our Family to Yours

Brown onions, lettuce, cabbage, cauliflower and swiss chard/silverbeet can all be sown into trays inside to be planted out later.

FRUIT

Melons in colder areas are traditionally grown in a glass house due to our shorter growing seasons. However some smaller rock melons will mature in a shorter time and are suitable to grow outdoors. Get their seeds started indoors now, and plant them out once every possibility of frost has passed.
